The reindeer from the North are herded by indigenous people. The reindeer from the South are best known as Rudolph. In the Arctic, I saw a vast white landscape. Lights coming from houses are so tiny here. I met a reindeer who was staring at me from behind a fence. He, just standing quietly, was a tourist attraction. I started to wonder how reindeer live, not in an enclosed cage, but in a landscape. I looked for reindeer at the supermarket in Oslo, asked my friends in Tromsø, and spent time together with reindeer and their herders in Finnmark. It is not easy to imagine how vulnerable they are while we live in the city. There are human interventions like mining, infrastructure developments etc., where Southern interests dominate in the North. Minorities are always conquered by majorities, physically, politically and socially. This book is not about biology, history or ethnology. It is about my personal experience and perspective on reindeer.
